Zagreb: Iran’s Greco-Roman wrestling team has clinched the world championship title, achieving this feat with one day of competition still remaining.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the team’s success includes gold medals won by Gholamreza Farrokhi in the 82 kg category and Amin Mirzazadeh in the 130 kg category. Additionally, Payam Ahmadi earned a silver medal in the 55 kg category. As the championship progresses, Mohammadhadi Saravi, the 2024 Olympic champion, along with Saeed Esmaeili and Alireza Mohmadi, are set to compete for more medals in the 97 kg, 67 kg, and 87 kg categories on Saturday night.
Iran’s Greco-Roman wrestling team first claimed the world champion status at the 2014 World Championships held in Uzbekistan. This achievement follows the recent victory of Iran’s freestyle team, which regained the championship title after a 12-year gap. Historically, the freestyle team has secured the World Championship title five times, with wins in 1961, 1965, 1998, 2002, and 2013.
The 2025 World Wrestling Championships took place from September 13 to 21 in Zagreb, Croatia.
