Iran Seeks to Nullify Sanctions Amid JCPOA Discussions: Parliament Speaker

Tehran: Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf has announced that Iran is actively working to both remove and nullify the sanctions imposed on the country. Qalibaf stated that discussions are underway with the five signatories of the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). These discussions aim to reach a consensus that would facilitate the lifting of both economic and diplomatic sanctions against Iran, while also finding ways to circumvent existing embargoes.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Qalibaf addressed the ongoing situation with the United States, particularly in light of a recent letter from U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran's subsequent response. The Iranian Foreign Ministry is currently handling this matter and is expected to prepare an official reply. The speaker pointed out that Trump had withdrawn from the JCPOA during his first term, despite the United States having initially signed the agreement.

Approximately 20 days ago, President Trump issued an executive order outlining his administration's policy toward Iran. This order called for control over Iran's nuclear and missile programs and targeted unconventional weapons such as drones. Qalibaf criticized Trump for not considering the benefits Iran would gain from complying with these demands, questioning the nature of such negotiations.

Despite these challenges, Iran remains committed to its obligations under the JCPOA. The three European signatories, along with China and Russia, continue to engage with the agreement. Qalibaf emphasized that Iran is open to negotiations, provided they result in tangible economic benefits for the country.

Economic benefits, as defined by Qalibaf, include enabling the Central Bank of Iran to participate in commercial and monetary exchanges. This would allow Iran to export oil, secure international shipping insurance, and attract foreign investment. Qalibaf concluded by stating that Trump's recent statements contradict these crucial requirements for any fruitful negotiation.
