Tehran: Iran has strongly rejected the US designation to the IAEA Board of Governors as incompatible with the letter and spirit of the Statute, as well as the Agency's founding principles.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, a statement was released by the Iranian delegation before the 70th IAEA General Conference under 'Election of Members to the Board of Governors', emphasizing that placing the US on the Board would create a profound contradiction. The statement highlighted concerns that such a designation would lead to a structural conflict of interest, undermine the neutrality of the Board, cast doubt on its decisions, and further erode confidence in the Agency itself.

The statement further elaborated that no State can be designated for Board membership exclusively based on its advancement in atomic energy technology. It stressed that eligibility for Board membership cannot be reduced to technological strength alone.

The statement also recalled that in 2025 and 2026, the US conducted aggressive actions against Iran, which constituted a material breach of the prohibition on the use of force, a fundamental principle of the UN. Additionally, the statement accused the US, along with the Israeli regime, of conducting 18 waves of attacks against Iran's peaceful safeguarded nuclear facilities.

These actions, according to resolutions of this Conference, are violations of the principles of the UN, international law, and the Statute of the Agency. Such acts are seen as contradictory to the principle of promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

In conclusion, the Islamic Republic of Iran has rejected the designation of the US to the Board and has disassociated itself from this decision.
