Iran to Submit Draft Resolution on Protecting Nuclear Facilities at IAEA Conference

Vienna: The Islamic Republic of Iran plans to present a draft resolution at the upcoming General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) emphasizing the unacceptability of attacks on nuclear facilities. This move comes amid heightened tensions over nuclear safety and security.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, diplomatic sources have indicated that the document is currently being prepared and will be introduced at the forthcoming meeting. Russia’s Ambassador to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, confirmed this information on X, noting that the resolution will be presented at the General Conference rather than the Board of Governors, contradicting earlier reports.

The 69th IAEA General Conference, which will address issues related to nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation, is scheduled to occur from September 15-19, 2025, in Vienna. This gathering will provide a platform for member states to discuss and reinforce commitments to nuclear safety.

The backdrop to Iran’s initiative includes ongoing indirect nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington, mediated by Oman. These discussions were disrupted when Israel launched large-scale aggression against Iran on June 13. In response, Washington also engaged in the conflict, bombing three of Iran’s primary nuclear facilities, citing concerns over Iran’s alleged development of nuclear weapons.
