Tehran: Iran's Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati has called on BRICS members to translate policy dialogue into practical initiatives and operational mechanisms, particularly in monetary and financial cooperation. Addressing the opening session of the BRICS finance ministers and central bank governors' meeting in India, Hemmati emphasized the importance of closer cooperation among member states to strengthen stability, trust, and sustainable development. He underlined that economic and financial stability cannot be achieved without peace, respect for international law, and adherence to the UN Charter.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Hemmati highlighted Iran's active participation in BRICS working groups since joining the bloc. Iran has contributed to discussions on cross-border payments, national currencies, financial technologies, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and sustainable finance. He called for initiatives that reduce transaction costs and risks, facilitate the use of national currencies, and improve payment connectivity among member states.
Hemmati described the New Development Bank as one of BRICS' key institutional achievements, expressing Iran's readiness to expand engagement with the bank and pursue membership with the support of other members. He stated that BRICS could play a more effective role in shaping a more inclusive, balanced, and resilient international financial architecture.
During the meeting, Hemmati also met his Indian counterpart Sanjay Malhotra to discuss global economic and financial developments, bilateral banking cooperation, and ways to facilitate trade and economic exchanges between Iran and India.
