Iran Urges EU Troika to Halt Actions Violating JCPOA and UNSC Resolution 2231.

NEW YORK: Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations has issued a strong call for the European troika-France, Germany, and the United Kingdom-to immediately cease actions that violate the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231. This demand follows a joint letter from the EU troika to the UN Security Council and Secretary-General, accusing Iran of non-compliance with these agreements. According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iran's permanent representative described these accusations as "baseless and politically motivated" in a letter addressed to the Security Council and the UN Secretary-General. The letter highlighted that the EU troika's claims ignore the root causes of the current situation and misrepresent Iran's actions. Iran defends its steps as remedial measures consistent with its rights under the JCPOA, taken in response to the United States' unilateral withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 and the subsequent non-com pliance by the E3. The letter further criticized the EU troika for failing to meet their obligations under the JCPOA, particularly their refusal to lift sanctions on Transition Day in October 2023. Iran condemned the EU's extension of its sanctions regime and the re-imposition of sanctions on Iranian entities, stating these actions violate the JCPOA and harm essential sectors in Iran. The letter also addressed Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), emphasizing its commitment to resolving remaining safeguards issues and criticizing the E3's disregard for Iran's constructive engagement with the Agency. Iran also defended its decision to enrich uranium at Fordow as a legitimate response to the E3's persistent non-compliance with their obligations. The letter rebuffed the E3's claims regarding Iran's intent to acquire nuclear weapons, asserting that Iran's nuclear activities are solely for peaceful purposes and consistent with its commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (N PT). In conclusion, Iran reiterated its commitment to diplomacy and called on the E3/EU to honor their commitments in good faith, urging them to reverse actions that undermine future prospects. Iran affirmed its readiness to fulfill its obligations under the JCPOA, provided that other parties demonstrate genuine political will and adhere to their commitments.
