Iran Urges Syrian Interim Authorities to Safeguard Civilians in Latakia and Tartus

Tehran: Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sa'eed Iravani, addressed the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the urgent need for Syria's interim authorities to ensure the security of civilians in Latakia and Tartus.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iravani's remarks came during a Security Council meeting focusing on the situation in the Middle East, particularly Syria. He condemned the violence in Latakia and Tartus since March 6, which has resulted in civilian casualties, especially among Alawites. Iravani called for decisive action from the interim authorities to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian access, and hold perpetrators accountable. He welcomed the Security Council's statement condemning the violence and urging a thorough investigation.

Iravani also highlighted the threat of foreign terrorist fighters in Syria, stressing the need for coordinated international efforts to combat terrorism. He urged the repatriation and accountability of these fighters to prevent further regional destabilization. Iran, he noted, remains committed to collaborating with international partners to address terrorism.

Expressing concern over Israel's actions, Iravani criticized recent Israeli airstrikes in Syria and the ongoing occupation of the Golan Heights. He called for the Security Council to take action against these violations and enforce Israel's withdrawal from occupied territories, citing international law.

Addressing Syria's humanitarian crisis, Iravani criticized U.S. and EU sanctions that hinder Syria's recovery. He welcomed the EU's decision to suspend some sanctions but insisted that all sanctions need lifting to aid Syria's reconstruction and refugee return.

Iravani emphasized that Syria's future should be determined by its people, advocating for an inclusive government through free elections and dialogue. He stressed the importance of a Syrian-led political process facilitated by the UN, aligning with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

Additionally, Iravani welcomed Syria's return to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, highlighting Iran's commitment to supporting Syria's sovereignty and contributing to regional peace.

In conclusion, Iravani rejected accusations from the U.S. representative, attributing Syria's humanitarian crisis to U.S. sanctions and actions. He reiterated Iran's dedication to peace and stability in Syria, denying any involvement in actions that would destabilize the region.
