Iran Urges UN Rights Body to Secure Compensation from Israel, US over June War

Geneva: A senior Iranian Judiciary official has called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to use all means at its disposal to ensure compensation for the Iranian people from Israel and the United States for the 12-day war in June.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Naser Seraj, Vice President of Iran’s Judiciary for International Affairs and Secretary of the country’s Human Rights Headquarters, addressed the Council’s 60th session in Geneva on Monday. He was speaking at a side event addressing the human rights effects of the war on Iran by the US and the Israeli regime.

Seraj stated that the Iranian people had expected urgent action from international peace and security bodies, like the UN Security Council, to stop ‘clear violations of international law.’ Instead, he accused the institutions of ‘politicization, inaction, and unacceptable silence,’ leading to ‘increasing public despair’ and the spread of insecurity.

He said the attack led to 1,100 deaths among the Iranian people, including 102 women, two of whom were pregnant, and 45 children and adolescents, the youngest just two months old. He added that 14 scientific and academic elites were also killed and over 5,600 civilians were wounded, alongside ‘irreparable psychological damage.’

‘The occupying Israeli regime refrained from any crime against my country’s people,’ Seraj said. He stressed that Israel widely targeted non-military infrastructure, including residential areas, hospitals, healthcare centers, schools, kindergartens, aid workers, and water and power systems, in violation of international humanitarian law.

Seraj further asserted that an attack on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities constituted a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 533 and the UN Charter, which he said could have led to a ‘catastrophic risk for the health of the people and the environment of the region.’

Addressing the global community, Seraj said the attack served as a serious warning to other countries. ‘We believe these aggressions and crimes must serve as a serious warning to the international community,’ he said, illustrating ‘how the policy of power (and unilateralism) can violate global peace and security.’

‘If we remain silent in the face of such violative actions, we have in fact paved the way for greater insecurity; an insecurity that could endanger the entire international community,’ the official warned.
