Iran Urges UN Security Council to Prevent Political Manipulation

New york: Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations has called upon the UN Security Council to uphold its primary responsibility with impartiality and effectiveness, emphasizing the need to prevent any member from exploiting the body for political or unilateral purposes. Amir-Saeid Iravani made these remarks during the UNSC Open Debate on ‘Maintenance of International Peace and Security: The United Nations-Looking into the Future’ held in New York on October 24, 2025.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iravani highlighted the significance of the debate coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, urging member states to reassert the supremacy of the UN Charter and commit to genuine multilateralism founded on equality, mutual respect, and the rule of law. He expressed concern over the current challenges facing the Charter’s principles, such as sovereign equality and peaceful dispute settlement, which are being tested by acts of aggression and the misuse of UN mechanisms.

Iravani cited two notable instances requiring the Council’s attention. Firstly, he condemned the acts of aggression by Israel against regional countries, including Iran, referencing the unprovoked war initiated by Israel on June 13, 2025, with support from the United States. He criticized the Council’s inaction in response to these violations, which he argued undermines the UN Charter.

Secondly, Iravani addressed the misuse of the Security Council’s authority by the three European participants of the JCPOA, under US influence, in their attempt to reimpose sanctions on Iran. He argued that this effort was a clear abuse of process and violated both resolution 2231 and the JCPOA, lacking legal validity and legitimacy.

Iravani concluded by emphasizing that the erosion of trust in the United Nations is not due to its principles but the failure to implement them consistently. He urged Member States to restore trust by reaffirming the Charter’s supremacy and committing to multilateralism, ensuring the Security Council operates without bias or manipulation.
