Iran Urges United Nations to Uphold Justice and National Rights

Tehran: The Foreign Ministry spokesperson has marked the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, saying Iran believes in a United Nations that genuinely represents the rights of nations and stands for justice. Speaking at a ceremony on Monday at the Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Political and International Studies, Esmaeil Baqaei said that the current state of global affairs reflects the failure of certain powers to uphold the UN Charter’s fundamental principles.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Baqaei stated that the UN was founded “on the ashes of a devastating world war,” serving as a reminder of humankind’s painful experiences and a commitment to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies. He emphasized that it is not the time for retreat or passivity, asserting Iran’s belief in a United Nations that truly represents the rights of nations and stands for justice.

Baqaei claimed that the UN’s primary mission, maintaining international peace and security, has been compromised by the unilateral and self-serving actions of a few powerful states. He noted that the objectives and principles of the UN Charter have been subject to distortion and violation by those expected to be its guardians, especially within the Security Council.

He criticized the United States and some allies, describing them as “the biggest violators” of the UN Charter, highlighting their support for Israel’s military actions against Palestinians. Over the past two years, Baqaei noted, the Israeli regime has conducted military attacks on several countries and committed acts of terrorism with the full backing of the US and certain European nations.

The spokesperson also condemned US policies in Latin America, citing interference and threats against Venezuela, Cuba, and other nations as violations of international law and peace. Baqaei emphasized that Iran has consistently been a proponent of peace, justice, human dignity, and friendly relations among nations, continuing to act as a responsible member of the UN despite enduring bias and unfair treatment.

Reaffirming Iran’s dedication to multilateralism, he stated, “We have never considered the United Nations an ineffective body, nor have we threatened its institutions. Let us renew our pledge to build a United Nations that can prevent the scourge of war for present and future generations.”
