Tehran: The Iranian Foreign Ministry has issued a strong warning to American citizens, urging them not to allow their children to become "mercenaries" in support of Israel's military ambitions. This plea follows an opinion piece in The Jerusalem Post that suggested the United States should exploit student loans and financial debt to recruit young Americans for a potential invasion of Iran.
According to TRTworld.com, Esmaeil Baqaei, a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, questioned the morality of trading debt forgiveness for American lives in a conflict driven by Israeli interests. He raised these concerns in a post on X, pointing to the controversial op-ed by AJ Jaff that advocated using financial incentives to bolster US military ranks for a ground assault on Iran.
The op-ed proposed a debt-relief enlistment program, suggesting that the current US military strength is inadequate for a comprehensive operation against Iran. Jaff argued that historical incentives like the GI Bill could be utilized to encourage voluntary enlistment, given the insufficient troop numbers for a ground invasion.
Jaff highlighted the financial burdens faced by young Americans, noting that those aged 18 to 34 typically carry over $40,000 in non-mortgage debt. This demographic, he suggested, is the target for recruitment efforts aimed at bolstering military numbers for a potential campaign against Iran. He estimated that between 750,000 and 1.5 million American troops would be necessary for a successful operation, far exceeding the current active US Army count.
Baqaei's response included a satirical meme referencing the series Squid Game, portraying the proposed recruitment strategy as a perilous endeavor that should not be financed by American lives and taxes. He emphasized that this would make ordinary Americans the financial and human cost of a war they did not choose.
The Iranian government's statement comes in the wake of heightened tensions following a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran in February, which resulted in significant casualties and retaliatory measures from Tehran. Despite a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding concerning navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, disagreements have stalled its implementation, further complicating US-Iran relations.
