Tehran: Iran's representative at the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to the International Criminal Court (ICC) has condemned the severe effects of unilateral sanctions, describing them as "crimes against humanity." According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Abbas Bagherpour, head of the Iranian delegation and Director General of International Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks in The Hague, urging the international community to address their adverse impact on human lives, particularly on patients and vulnerable groups. Bagherpour stated that the detrimental effects of unilateral coercive measures, directly targeting the lives and health of ordinary citizens, fall within the jurisdiction of international criminal law. He also underlined Iran's commitment to confronting impunity and prosecuting serious crimes by mentioning the approval of a bill on 'International Crimes' and its submission to the Iranian Parliament. This legislation aims to establish a specialized framework fo r prosecuting genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression, showcasing Iran's willingness to cooperate internationally. Bagherpour expressed concern about the impact of unilateralism and the normalization of genocide and war crimes on the pursuit of justice, stating that it places the ICC under a significant test for future generations. He condemned the situation in Palestine, describing the ongoing Israeli actions there as an 'open policy of genocide' that has deeply affected the conscience of humanity. Furthermore, Bagherpour expressed disappointment in the ICC for not initiating a full investigation into crimes committed against Palestinians. Referring to illegal Israeli-US aggression against Iran in June, he claimed that the attacks deliberately targeted civilians, including women and children, as well as scientists, journalists, and civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and energy facilities, including peaceful nuclear sites. Bagherpour reiterated the need to pursue in dividual criminal responsibility for those who ordered, planned, or executed the attacks. He also called for the independence and impartiality of the ICC, urging its judges and staff to act without external influence, political pressure, or intimidation. Bagherpour emphasized the necessity of global cooperation and genuine adherence to the principles of international law in achieving international criminal justice and combating serious crimes, calling for joint efforts to secure a peaceful future for coming generations.
