Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi Stresses Importance of Upcoming Indirect Talks with U.S.

Tehran: Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has emphasized the significance of the upcoming indirect talks between Iran and the United States in Oman, describing them as both an opportunity and a test for the diplomatic efforts between the two nations.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araqchi expressed Iran's readiness to engage earnestly in the negotiations, in light of President Donald Trump's recent comments. He noted that the talks, scheduled for Saturday in Oman, are intended to pave the way for a potential agreement. Araqchi highlighted that the model of engagement proposed is not new, citing past indirect talks mediated by the European Union as a precedent that proved both possible and productive.

Araqchi pointed out that indirect negotiations are not merely a tactic or ideological reflection, but a strategic choice based on experience. He underscored the need to overcome mistrust and doubts about the sincerity of intentions, particularly in light of the U.S. policy of 'maximum pressure' prior to any diplomatic interaction. Araqchi stressed the importance of ruling out a military solution, echoing President Trump's call for a ceasefire to end the Ukraine conflict.

The Foreign Minister emphasized Iran's stance against coercion and imposition, warning against escalating the U.S. military presence in the region. He noted that Iran remains committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and reiterated the country's position against developing nuclear weapons, as affirmed by U.S. intelligence assessments.

Araqchi addressed misconceptions about Iran's economic openness, stating that the country welcomes international businesses and highlighted past negotiations with Boeing as an example. He reiterated Iran's readiness for indirect negotiations and called for mutual fulfillment of commitments, stressing that respect and diplomacy can pave the way forward.

Concluding his remarks, Araqchi warned against military buildups and emphasized Iran's preference for diplomacy while asserting its right to self-defense. He urged the United States to demonstrate seriousness about diplomacy and seize the opportunity for a peaceful resolution.
