Vienna: The permanent representatives of Iran, China, and Russia to Vienna have convened with the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ahead of the agency’s upcoming Board of Governors session. This strategic meeting underscores the collaborative efforts of these nations in shaping the discussions around Iran’s nuclear program.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the meeting was announced late Tuesday by Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna. Ulyanov shared that the representatives engaged in a dialogue with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and his team to prepare for the forthcoming Board of Governors session.
Ulyanov highlighted the significant roles played by Russia, China, and Iran in influencing the trajectory of Iran’s nuclear program. He emphasized that these countries are pivotal in determining how the situation will evolve and noted their recent trilateral meeting to align their positions ahead of the Board of Governors session.
The Board of Governors is slated to meet from November 19 to 21, specifically addressing Iran’s nuclear issue within the framework of the Safeguards Agreement. Iran has expressed its commitment to the Safeguards and its intention to maintain cooperation with the IAEA, aligned with legislation passed by its Parliament earlier this year.
This legislation resulted in the suspension of Iran’s broader cooperation with the IAEA, including extensive inspections of its nuclear sites, following the agency’s decision not to condemn airstrikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian nuclear facilities in June. Iran continues to assert that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and urges the IAEA to refrain from adopting politicized stances under Western influence.
