Iranian Speaker Criticizes US Economic Strategy Amidst Rising Bond Yields

Tehran:Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has addressed recent comments by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who predicted a collapse of Iran's economy within two weeks. Ghalibaf outlined the pressures Iran can exert on the US economy.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Ghalibaf highlighted the US government's financial challenges, noting that earlier loans taken at near-zero interest rates now require refinancing at much higher rates. He emphasized that the purchasing power of bond buyers is dwindling, with major buyers like China and Japan showing less interest in US bonds, leading to rising bond yields.

Ghalibaf pointed out that Iran's strategic position in keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed has contributed to high energy prices and rising US bond yields, exacerbating US economic troubles. He suggested that respect for Iran's rights is essential for resolving these issues. Recently, US 30-year government bond yields reached their highest levels since 2002, with potential to return to rates from the 1990s.

Additionally, Ghalibaf shared an image of David Zervos, appointed as Bessent's advisor, known for his unconventional statements. Zervos's appointment has been met with humor in financial markets, highlighting the ongoing tension in economic discourse.
