Iran’s Envoy Emphasizes Need for Stronger Ties with Russia: Lawmaker

Moscow: Iran’s ambassador to Russia has stressed the importance of bolstering the strategic partnership and enhancing relations across various fields between Moscow and Tehran, as reported by a senior Iranian lawmaker. Ebrahim Rezaei, the spokesperson for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, made these remarks following a committee session where Kazem Jalali, Iran’s envoy in Moscow, presented a comprehensive report and responded to members’ inquiries.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Jalali provided an update on the status of Iran-Russia relations, particularly highlighting developments in recent months. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining robust ties with Russia, which is not only a significant neighbor but also a crucial ally in countering the unilateralism of Western powers.

During the meeting, Rezaei conveyed the ambassador’s insights into Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS, along with the nation’s free trade agreement with Eurasian member states. Jalali described these affiliations as valuable opportunities to elevate economic relations with Russia.

On the topic of uranium enrichment, the ambassador informed the committee that Russia supports Iran’s stance on the nuclear issue and is unaware of any US-backed Israeli plans to attack Iran. Additionally, Jalali clarified that Tehran has not sought to purchase the S-400 air-defense system from Russia. However, he noted that President Masoud Pezeshkian is committed to advancing relations with Russia and is personally overseeing certain matters.
