Tehran: The ambassador and deputy permanent representative of Iran to the United Nations has reaffirmed Iran's commitment to defending its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests. Gholamhossein Darzi, addressing a UN Security Council meeting on 'Conflict Prevention and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes', emphasized that all actions taken by the Islamic Republic against aggressors are defensive and in line with international law.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Darzi highlighted the illegal and unprovoked acts of aggression initiated by the United States and the Israeli regime over the past year. He stated that Iran has exercised its inherent right to self-defense, as guaranteed under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Darzi underscored that compliance with international law, respect for sovereignty, and peaceful dispute resolution are vital for conflict prevention.
The statement by the Iranian representative stressed Iran's adherence to international principles and its commitment to dialogue and diplomacy. Despite past violations by the United States regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and Security Council resolution 2231, Iran engaged in negotiations in 2025 to achieve a durable agreement. However, the United States resorted to unlawful force, violating the UN Charter, during ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Darzi condemned the acts of aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime in June 2025 and February 2026, which involved targeting civilians and critical infrastructure. These actions, he noted, are grave violations of international law with significant repercussions for regional and global peace and security.
In response to these violations, Iran demonstrated its commitment to diplomacy through the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on June 17, which established a framework for de-escalation and peaceful dispute resolution. However, Darzi pointed out that the United States has since breached its obligations, continuing military attacks and imposing a maritime blockade.
The Iranian representative warned that unchecked aggression by the United States could undermine mediation efforts and erode confidence in negotiated settlements. He called on the Security Council to take decisive action to compel the United States to cease its unlawful conduct and ensure accountability for its violations of international law.
Darzi concluded by reiterating Iran's measures as defensive and consistent with international law. He affirmed that Iran will continue to exercise its right to self-defense to protect its sovereignty and national interests in accordance with the UN Charter.
