Iraq FM Backs Iran-US Talks in Oman, Warns of Regional War Risks

Baghdad: Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has expressed support for the indirect talks between Iran and the United States held in Oman, while voicing concern over regional developments. Speaking to Al Araby TV, Hussein emphasized that Iran is a neighboring country and the US is a partner and ally of Iraq, highlighting that any conflict in the region would have significant repercussions for Iraq.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, a new round of Iran-US nuclear talks took place in Muscat on February 6, marking the first such engagement in eight months following an Israeli-US 12-day military conflict with Iran. The discussions were mediated by the Sultanate of Oman, with Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi facilitating the exchange of views, considerations, and approaches between the Iranian and American delegations.

On domestic matters, Hussein stated that the election of Iraq's prime minister remains an internal affair, with ongoing discussions. He also mentioned his own potential candidacy for the presidency, describing himself as 'a great chance' for the position.

Addressing the issue of Daesh prisoners, Hussein noted that Baghdad has initiated dialogues with several countries regarding the repatriation of their nationals detained as Daesh members in Syrian jails.
