New york: Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, voiced strong opposition to the UN Security Council's recent meeting on Resolution 2231, condemning the session as legally unfounded. He emphasized the responsibility of the United States and Israel for their actions, urging that they be held fully accountable for any illegal activities.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iravani expressed gratitude towards Russia and China for opposing the convening of the meeting and rejecting the claims by France, the UK, and the US regarding the resolution's continued validity. He also acknowledged Pakistan and Somalia's abstention from voting, highlighting their refusal to support the meeting. Iravani argued that the resolution, having expired in October 2025, no longer holds any legal force, rendering the Security Council's discussions under the "Non-Proliferation" agenda item baseless.
Iravani criticized the Secretary-General's report and the briefing by Under-Secretary-General Ms. DiCarlo as violations of the Secretariat's mandate. He reiterated Iran's consistent stance on the snapback mechanism, supported by both China and Russia, and claimed that the E3 (France, Germany, and the UK) had no legal grounds to invoke it due to their failure to fulfill commitments under the JCPOA and Resolution 2231.
The ambassador categorically rejected allegations regarding Iran's nuclear program, attributing the current situation to the US's withdrawal from the JCPOA, E3's failures, and unlawful military attacks by the US and Israel on Iran's nuclear facilities. He condemned the attacks as violations of international law, specifically Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, and criticized certain Council members for shifting responsibility onto Iran instead of condemning the aggressors.
Iravani called for the Security Council to uphold its responsibilities and hold the US and Israel accountable for their actions, stressing Iran's position as a responsible party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. He highlighted the need for decisive measures to prevent further escalation and ensure compliance with international obligations, warning that Iran may reconsider its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding if the US continues its violations.
