New york: Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, has called on the United Nations Security Council to refrain from actions that could provoke further tensions in the Middle East. This request comes in response to the ongoing situation in the region, which was addressed at the request of Bahrain. Iravani emphasized the importance of fully implementing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States and continuing negotiations towards a comprehensive agreement.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Ambassador Iravani articulated his concerns during a Security Council briefing on the situation in the Middle East. He criticized the United States and Israel for their aggressive actions against Iran, which he claims violate the United Nations Charter and international law. Iravani described the United States and Israel as the primary aggressors, highlighting that Iran has been the victim of unjustified wars of aggression. He accused the U.S. of targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure during attacks in 2025 and 2026, resulting in significant loss of life.
Iravani also addressed the issue of the United States violating the ceasefire agreed upon in the Islamabad MoU, stating that Iran has exercised its right to self-defense in response to these violations. He condemned recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran's southern coastal facilities as a breach of international agreements and urged the U.S. to respect Iran's sovereignty.
Furthermore, Iravani criticized Resolution 2817, which he described as politically motivated and failing to recognize Iran's right to self-defense. He reiterated Iran's commitment to the MoU and called on the U.S. to cease its unlawful actions and comply with international law.
The Iranian Ambassador also expressed appreciation for the diplomatic efforts facilitated by Pakistan and supported by Qatar and other nations, which led to the signing of the MoU. He emphasized Iran's commitment to the MoU's provisions concerning the Strait of Hormuz and warned against external interference that could undermine the agreement.
