According to Islamic Republic News Agency, President Higgins appealed to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to invoke Chapter Seven powers that allow bypassing the Security Council to take enforcement action, including the use of force, to protect international peace and security. Higgins emphasized the need for Guterres to use these procedures to establish an international defense corridor, even if the Security Council is blocked or disagrees.

Higgins expressed his concerns about the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, highlighting the ‘incredible destruction of an entire people.’ He questioned whether the world would continue to witness the suffering of children, women, and families deprived of basic necessities like food and water.

The situation in Gaza has worsened since Israel imposed a crippling siege in early March, severely restricting the entry of essential supplies into the territory. The establishment of Israeli-run aid distribution centers has led to a global outcry, as a growing number of aid seekers have been fatally shot by Israeli forces while waiting for food.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 1,370 Palestinian aid seekers have been killed in shootings by Israeli forces since May 27. The escalating violence has prompted calls from various international actors for immediate intervention.

On Sunday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei urged the international community to impose an arms embargo on Israel as part of comprehensive measures to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
