Tehran: Reports emerged at 30pm on Monday of an explosion at Evin Prison, located in the northern part of the Iranian capital, Tehran. The attack was quickly highlighted by Israel's Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, who shared video footage on social media showing a prison door hit by a missile. The video, though lacking a specified source, was corroborated by other images from Tehran confirming the strike.
According to France24.com, the video shared by Saar on June 23, 2025, documented an Israeli airstrike on Evin Prison's main gate in the southwestern part of the compound. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described Monday's attack as part of a broader wave of strikes targeting critical components of the Iranian regime, including facilities involved in internal repression within the capital.
Evin Prison houses not only common criminals but also a significant number of political prisoners, including 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammad and several foreign detainees. The aftermath of the attack was detailed in a phone call made by Abolfazl Ghadyani, a well-known critic of the Islamic regime incarcerated at Evin. He conveyed to his son that "all the windows are shattered, and the prison hospital is partially damaged." Ahmad Ghadyani, relaying his father's words, questioned the regime's intentions regarding the continued detention of political prisoners, many of whom are reportedly unwell.
A former political prisoner with contacts inside Evin conveyed that the women's ward suffered significant damage, although no serious injuries were reported among its inhabitants. In addition to the prison, Israeli jets targeted other regime-affiliated sites in Tehran, including the Basij headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), internal security command centers, and the Countdown to Israel's Destruction clock in Palestine Square, as reported by Ynet News.
The timing of the strikes coincided with a statement by US President Donald Trump, who suggested the possibility of regime change in Iran. In a social media post, Trump questioned the Iranian regime's ability to improve the nation, hinting at regime change if they fail to "MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN."
