Israeli Regime Poses Persistent Threat to West Asian Security: Iran UN Envoy

New york: Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, has asserted that the Israeli regime poses a serious threat to peace and security in West Asia and beyond. This statement was made during a UN Security Council session focused on the situation in Palestine and the broader region.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iravani emphasized that achieving genuine collective security in West Asia necessitates a unified response addressing the primary source of instability, which he identified as the Israeli regime. He described Israel as an "outlaw and terrorist regime" that continues to threaten regional and international peace and security.

Iravani highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, pointing out that the region remains under siege with Israel allegedly violating ceasefire agreements through military actions and imposing severe restrictions on humanitarian access. He criticized the ongoing illegal settlement expansions in the West Bank as clear violations of international law and relevant UN resolutions, which further entrench occupation and instability.

The Iranian envoy expressed support for credible efforts to relieve the suffering of the Palestinian people. He outlined that any viable solution for Gaza must involve a durable ceasefire, full withdrawal of occupying forces, and unhindered humanitarian access, all while respecting the Palestinian right to self-determination. He stressed the importance of accountability for those responsible for violations of international law, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

Iravani also addressed broader regional impacts, accusing Israel of extending its aggression beyond Palestinian territories, including actions in Syria, the Syrian Golan Heights, and Lebanon. He urged the UN Security Council to take decisive actions to compel Israel to uphold ceasefire agreements and halt attacks against civilians.

The Iranian envoy condemned the United States and Israel for what he described as an unprovoked war of aggression against Iran's sovereignty on February 28, 2026. He accused the aggressors of violating international humanitarian law and targeting civilian infrastructure, resulting in significant civilian casualties and damage to educational, healthcare, and cultural facilities.

Iravani called for the United States and Israel to be held accountable for these actions, stressing the necessity of pursuing individual criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity in accordance with international law. He concluded by rejecting allegations against Iran, criticizing efforts to shift blame onto his country and highlighting the lack of legal, moral, or political standing of Israel to accuse other member states.
