Gaza: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has sounded an alarm over Israel’s impediment to aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip, resulting in a lack of essential resources for the population’s survival.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the U.N. agency reported on Thursday that ongoing Israeli airstrikes have been targeting makeshift shelters for displaced Palestinians, leading to ‘mass casualties.’ OCHA highlighted that Gaza is experiencing its most severe humanitarian crisis since the onset of the Israeli offensive in October 2023.
The report from OCHA detailed that aid efforts in Gaza have been critically disrupted due to Israel’s intensified military actions. The blockade, which has been in place for over 50 days, has halted both humanitarian and commercial deliveries. Deadly attacks on aid workers and their facilities, along with stringent movement restrictions, have exacerbated the crisis.
An official from OCHA described the dire situation as the ‘deliberate dismantling of Palestinian life’ in the region. Despite a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement implemented in January, the Israeli army resumed its offensive on March 18, resulting in the deaths of 1,890 people and injuries to 4,950 others.
In addition to the ongoing conflict, last November saw the International Criminal Court issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister in charge of military affairs, Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Furthermore, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its actions in the enclave.
