Italy’s Florence University Severs Ties with Israeli Academic Institutions

Florence: The University of Florence, located in Italy, has made the decision to discontinue its collaboration with certain scientific institutions affiliated with the Israeli regime. This decision comes in response to calls from over 500 academics, staff members, researchers, and students within the university.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the university’s announcement, which was reported by La Nazione newspaper, revealed that five of its departments have engaged in an ‘academic boycott’ against Israeli academic institutes. Notably, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has ended its partnership with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Additionally, the Departments of Engineering, as well as Agricultural Sciences and Technology, have halted their collaborations.

University members have urged the broader academic community in Italy to acknowledge their role and responsibility concerning the Israeli actions against Gaza residents. They have strongly criticized the continued attacks on Gaza schools, emphasizing that these attacks are depriving Palestinian children of their right to education.

In a related development, the management council of Trinity College Dublin has also decided to terminate partnerships with Israeli universities and companies. This move is a protest against the ongoing violations of international and humanitarian laws in Gaza.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported on Saturday that since early October 2023, at least 58,765 Palestinians have lost their lives due to the regime’s military actions in the Strip.
