Tehran: Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangiri has announced that 71 people were killed in an Israeli attack on Evin Prison, located in northern Tehran. The announcement was made on Sunday, as per a press release by the media center of the Judiciary, detailing the latest toll of the attack that occurred on June 23.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, those who lost their lives included administrative staff, young men fulfilling their military service, inmates, and their family members who were visiting. Additionally, neighbors living near the prison were also among those killed or injured. Jahangiri emphasized that the Israeli attack resulted in significant material damage and described the strike as a ‘full-scale crime.’
Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei has condemned the attack, asserting that Iran plans to address the issue in international legal forums. The incident is part of a broader conflict that began on June 13 when Israel initiated an unprovoked war against Iran, resulting in over 600 casualties, including military personnel, scientists, and civilians.
In response, the Iranian Armed Forces launched counterattacks, causing extensive damage in the occupied territories. On June 22, the United States joined Israel in a coordinated assault on three Iranian nuclear sites, which violated international law and drew global condemnation. The U.S.-Israeli aggression lasted for 12 days and concluded with a ceasefire agreement.
