Lavrov Claims Russia’s Trust in the West Has Been Severely Damaged

Maputo: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Moscow's trust in Western countries has significantly deteriorated due to what he described as repeated breaches of commitments and undermining of past agreements. According to Iraqi News Agency, Lavrov expressed these sentiments during a press conference with Mozambique's Foreign Minister Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas in Maputo. He criticized Western countries for failing to uphold guarantees for agreements reached in 2014, 2015, and 2019. Lavrov referred to these guarantees as having 'proved false' and conveyed skepticism about the West's calls for negotiated solutions. Lavrov further accused the West of undermining a negotiated solution between Russia and Ukraine in 2022. He stated that Russia's trust has been exhausted and that Moscow would no longer rely on Western statements about seeking a political settlement. In addition, Lavrov acknowledged Mozambique's understanding of the situation from Russia's perspective. He expressed gratitude t owards Mozambique's 'balanced and responsible' stance at the United Nations and its refusal to support Western efforts to prioritize the Ukrainian issue on the international agenda.
