Tehran: Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has agreed to pardon, reduce, or commute the sentences of over 1,500 Iranian inmates.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Ayatollah Khamenei approved a request on Wednesday from Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei. This request aimed to suspend or mitigate the sentences of inmates eligible for parole or sentence reduction.
The decision aligns with the approaching Eid al-Fitr, marking the conclusion of Ramadan, and the anniversary of the Islamic Republic's establishment as the governing system. Judiciary Chief Mohseni Ejei's letter to the Leader specifically requested clemency for 1,526 individuals convicted in general, revolutionary, and military courts.
Article 110 (11) of the Iranian Constitution provides the Leader with the authority to pardon or reduce sentences based on a proposal from the head of the judiciary. Last month, Ayatollah Khamenei granted clemency to over 3,000 convicts in celebration of Eid al-Mab'ath and the birth anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the third Shia Imam.
