Tehran: Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei commented on the ongoing nuclear talks between Iran and the United States, emphasizing that any negotiation initiated under the premise of imposed pre-judgment will not yield meaningful results. Baqaei made these remarks during his weekly press briefing in Tehran, responding to recent statements by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Witkoff, in an interview with Fox News, expressed curiosity about why Iran does not 'capitulate' over its nuclear program despite a significant American military presence near its borders. Baqaei responded by stating that Iran's positions on nuclear issues and sanctions relief are transparent and that the country is fully aware of the US stance. He reiterated that negotiations require mutual goodwill and seriousness, with Iran formulating its approach for forthcoming discussions with the US.
Baqaei also addressed the inspection of Iran's damaged nuclear sites, following comments by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. He clarified that granting IAEA access to these sites is not a precondition for negotiations and has not been raised by the US. Iran's cooperation with the IAEA, he stated, continues separately from these negotiations.
The spokesperson further commented on Iran's designation of the naval and air forces of European Union countries as terrorists, a decision taken by the Supreme National Security Council in response to the EU's designation of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps on its terror list.
Regarding the implementation of the Additional Protocol, Baqaei mentioned that Iran has prior experience with voluntary implementation during the period when the 2015 nuclear deal was in effect. He indicated that any such decision would involve concessions, especially in lifting economic sanctions.
Baqaei explained that the Supreme National Security Council is responsible for decisions on nuclear negotiations, with the Foreign Ministry executing actions in accordance with the council's directives. He noted Iran's readiness for continuous negotiations, emphasizing the urgency of lifting unjust sanctions affecting the Iranian people.
The spokesperson asserted that Iran remains unaffected by threats and is prepared to respond appropriately if negotiations are used as a tool for deception. He also highlighted Israel's role in undermining talks and its expansionist policies as a threat to regional peace.
Baqaei concluded by addressing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, urging both nations to resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomacy, with Iran offering its assistance to prevent escalation.
