Geneva: Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, warned against the threats posed by nuclear weapons and stated that nuclear disarmament is the only way to achieve world peace. Bahreini made these remarks during a meeting of the UN Disarmament Conference, expressing his concern over the simultaneous occurrence of the 2025 Disarmament Conference and an unprecedented arms race, particularly in the nuclear weapons sector, along with the accompanying rhetoric and threats of their use.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Bahreini highlighted that a significant amount of resources, which could be allocated to social and economic development and the establishment of sustainable peace and security worldwide, is being expended on the maintenance, production, and renewal of nuclear weapons and war-mongering efforts. He criticized the nuclear-armed nations for failing to meet their nuclear disarmament obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), while also pursuing the renewal and modernization of their nuclear arsenals.
Bahreini pointed out the existence of approximately 3,880 active nuclear warheads and a total of about 12,000 nuclear warheads globally. He emphasized that countries with nuclear capabilities, especially NATO member states, continue to rely on these weapons in violation of their legally binding obligations under the NPT Treaty and agreements reached during its review conferences.
