Palestinian National Council Confronts Plans to Liquidate UNRWA

Ramallah: The Refugee Committee of the Palestinian National Council has convened a critical virtual meeting to address the pressing political and humanitarian challenges confronting the Palestinian refugee issue in both the homeland and the diaspora. This meeting took place with the participation of committee members from various locations, alongside the Presidency of the Palestinian National Council and the Head of the Refugee Affairs Department of the Palestine Liberation Organization.According to Union of OIC News Agencies, the head of the Refugee Committee, Walid Al-Awad, initiated the meeting by highlighting the significance of this gathering amidst increasing threats to the Palestinian cause. He emphasized the systematic attempts to undermine the right of return, end UNRWA's mandate, and enforce projects of forced displacement and resettlement. Participants explored strategies to uphold the refugee issue, enhance the resilience of Palestinian camps, and secure international support for sustainable fun ding to maintain the agency's mandate and vital services.The meeting saw the involvement of key figures including Ahmed Abu Holi, Ali Faisal, Rami Al-Madhoun, and other committee members. Ali Faisal, the deputy head of the National Council, warned of attempts to resolve the conflict by destroying camps to impose the Greater Israel project. He called for a unified movement to confront the escalating threats and emphasized the need for a comprehensive national strategy to safeguard Palestinian rights.Abu Holi provided a comprehensive briefing on the situation of refugees and the challenges facing UNRWA. He stressed adherence to the UN mandate of the agency and rejected any attempts to undermine its role. Abu Holi also outlined the department's strategy for field interventions and diplomatic efforts to ensure the dignity and resilience of Palestinian refugees.Walid al-Awad reiterated that targeting UNRWA threatens the legal framework of the Palestinian cause. He warned against alternatives that diminish re fugee rights and emphasized that protecting the agency's mandate is a non-negotiable international obligation. The committee members reviewed conditions in refugee camps and called for international support to uphold UNRWA's mandate.The meeting concluded with participants affirming the centrality of the Palestinian refugee issue in the national project and the importance of Palestinian camps as witnesses to historical injustices. They adopted a recovery and reconstruction plan for Palestinian camps and stressed the need for international protection for UNRWA's mandate. The participants condemned ongoing military aggression against refugee camps and called for coordinated efforts to provide relief and reconstruction for affected areas.
