Rightwing Populist Sanseito Party Shakes Japan with Election Surge

Tokyo: Japan’s political landscape has been significantly altered following the recent elections for the upper house, the House of Councillors, held on July 20. The conservative ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has been grappling with various challenges, including corruption scandals, rising prices, and U.S. tariffs on Japanese exports, faced a formidable challenge.

According to EMM, the ruling coalition, consisting of the LDP and its junior partner Komeito, lost its majority in the house. Despite the centre-left Constitutional Democratic Party maintaining its status as the largest opposition group, the election’s standout development was the rise of the Sanseito Party. Sanseito, an ultranationalist populist party, managed to capture the public’s attention by focusing on immigration, using the provocative slogan “Japanese First” as a central theme in their campaign.

Sanseito’s success in the election was evident as it secured 14 seats in the 248-seat chamber, marking a substantial increase from the single seat it held following the last election in 2022. This shift reflects a growing sentiment among voters for a more nationalistic approach to governance, challenging the status quo and signaling potential changes in Japan’s political dynamics.
