Vienna: Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna has issued a warning to Western powers regarding the potential consequences of proposing an anti-Iran resolution during the upcoming Board of Governors meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Mikhail Ulyanov, the Russian envoy, highlighted the expected tense discussions on Iran’s nuclear program at the June session of the IAEA Board of Governors, set to commence tomorrow. Ulyanov revealed that the United States, along with three European countries-France, Britain, and Germany-plans to introduce a draft resolution addressing this matter. However, he cautioned that such an initiative would not yield positive outcomes.
The warning from Russia follows reports from Western media suggesting that the aforementioned countries have prepared a resolution accusing Iran of ‘non-compliance’ with its safeguard obligations for the first time in nearly two decades. These efforts are part of an attempt to revisit issues previously settled under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.
Tehran has already responded with a warning of its own, promising a serious and decisive reaction to any moves perceived as a violation of its rights. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi urged the European signatories of the JCPOA to avoid making a ‘strategic mistake,’ emphasizing that Iran is prepared to respond decisively.
Araqchi further expressed his concerns on social media, stating that after years of cooperation with the IAEA, which resulted in a resolution addressing claims of a possible military dimension to Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, the country is once again facing accusations of non-compliance.
