Washington: The United States has initiated sanctions against two individuals and five entities involved in importing refined petroleum products, thereby circumventing sanctions to support the Houthis. These actors have reportedly accrued millions in personal profits while enhancing the Iran-backed Houthis' capability to threaten vital international shipping lanes.
According to EMM, the United States remains dedicated to disrupting the illicit revenue streams of the Houthis by exerting pressure on the financial facilitators who support the Houthi operations. This recent action is part of a broader strategy to target Houthi revenue channels and their procurement of weapons, reinforcing the U.S. commitment to counter-terrorism, promote regional security, and ensure freedom of navigation.
Further developments include the Department of State's re-designation of Ansarallah as a Foreign Terrorist Organization on March 4, 2025, in accordance with section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This latest measure is enforced under the counterterrorism authority Executive Order 13224, complementing the numerous actions by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) targeting Houthi leaders, illicit revenue generation, financial facilitators, and suppliers.
