The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture has announced that it has successfully expanded the cultivation of the Manilkara zapota tree in multiple regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including Jazan, the Eastern Region, and Aseer. The move is a significant stride toward diversifying the Kingdom's agricultural output and supporting sustainable development. The ministry said the Manilkara zapota, a medium-sized, evergreen tree originally from Central America, adapts to the Kingdom's dry, hot climates, and is capable of withstanding low temperatures down to -5.2 degrees Celsius. Growing up to 20 meters in height, the tree's fruit is used in various industries, including dairy production and dental fillings, providing substantial economic benefits. The ministry said that this successful cultivation demonstrates the Kingdom's capacity to reach agricultural self-sufficiency and strengthen its economy.
