Tehran: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has told member states, observers, and partners of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization under the Shanghai Plus framework that they can play an important role in building a multipolar world based on multilateralism, sovereign equality, and the rule of law. Addressing a summit of Shanghai Plus countries, Pezeshkian called for more equitable and effective action by the United Nations and its Security Council in dealing with global developments.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Pezeshkian emphasized that changes in the international balance of power should not result in one center of power being replaced by another or in the transfer of hegemony. He noted that the United Nations should better represent the realities of the changing world and more effectively fulfill its mission of maintaining international peace and security, preventing war, and peacefully resolving disputes. Pezeshkian described the performance of the United Nations and the Security Council in dealing with developments in Gaza, Lebanon, and the recent aggression against Iran as 'very disappointing.'

The Iranian president also highlighted attacks by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran, including attacks on civilian centers, vital infrastructure, and peaceful nuclear facilities, constituting clear violations of the UN Charter and principles of international law. He noted that the continuation of such actions could undermine countries' confidence in international mechanisms and diplomacy.

Pezeshkian reiterated that diplomacy and negotiations remain the main path for resolving disputes and stressed the need for good faith, respect for commitments, and avoidance of the use of force to achieve lasting peace. He underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation, respect for the UN Charter, and the sovereign equality of states in fostering a multipolar world.

The Iranian president concluded by expressing Iran's commitment to diplomacy, stating that despite defending itself in conflicts, Iran continues to regard diplomacy and negotiations as the main path for resolving disputes. He urged Shanghai Plus countries to contribute to achieving a world where multilateral cooperation and respect for international law prevail.
