Tripoli: Seif Al-Islam Qaddafi, the son of Libya's late longtime ruler, has been killed, reports said on Tuesday. His adviser, Abdallah Othman Abdurrahim, confirmed his death in a social media post, saying that he was killed by unidentified gunmen.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Seif Al-Islam, 53, had been seen as his father's successor. He was arrested in November 2011 in southern Libya following a warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC). In 2015, he was sentenced to death after a speedy trial but was later granted amnesty, allowing him to re-enter the political scene.
In 2021, Seif Al-Islam announced his intention to run for president, though the elections were indefinitely postponed. His untimely death has thrown Libya's already unstable political landscape into further uncertainty, as he was considered a key figure in the country's future governance.
