Switzerland today assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for October, succeeding Slovenia. The Security Council consists of 15 member states, each with one vote. Five are permanent members with veto power: Russia, China, France, UK, and US. The council also includes 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly. Along with Switzerland, the non-permanent members this term are Slovenia, Sierra Leone, Republic of Korea, Mozambique, Malta, Algeria, Japan, Guyana, and Ecuador. The Security Council is one of the six main organs of the UN, alongside the Secretariat, the General Assembly, the International Court of Justice, the Trusteeship Council, and the Economic and Social Council.
