Syria and Israeli Regime Agree to Ceasefire amid Sweida Clashes

Tehran: U.S. Special Envoy for Syria and its ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack announced that the Syrian interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and the Israeli regime’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reached a ceasefire agreement. This development comes after recent clashes in the Sweida Governorate, located in southern Syria, which have garnered support from neighboring countries like Turkey and Jordan.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Barrack emphasized the importance of unity among Syria’s religious and ethnic groups and called for cooperation among the Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis to work towards a peaceful and united Syria. The call for peace comes in light of reports from the London-based war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which stated that the death toll in Sweida has risen to 718. Contrarily, Syria’s Ministry of Health reported 260 deaths and 1,698 injuries due to the recent conflicts.

Syria’s Supreme Fatwa Council has issued a declaration against seeking aid from the
Israeli regime, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians and preventing sectarian divisions. The Council highlighted the responsibility of the government in Damascus to safeguard all citizens, ensure no sectarian targeting occurs, and support the oppressed in accordance with Islamic law.

In recent developments, the Israeli regime executed airstrikes targeting Syria’s Ministry of Defense in Damascus and Syrian government forces in Sweida. These actions have further escalated tensions in the region, underscoring the critical need for the newly agreed ceasefire to hold and bring about stability.
