The Arab League mourned Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi, the former Secretary-General of the League, who died today at the age of 89. Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said in a statement mourning Al-Arabi: "The loss of Arab diplomacy is great with the departure of this stature." Nabil Al-Arabi assumed the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt in March 2011, before being chosen as Secretary-General of the Arab League in May of the same year, a position he continued in until 2016. Nabil Al-Arabi served as Egypt's Ambassador to India, then as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva between 1987 and 1991, and in New York between 1991 and 1999. He also served as a judge at the International Court of Justice between 2001 and 2006, and as a member of the United Nations International Law Commission from 1994 to 2001. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs mourned Ambassador Nabil El- Araby. It said in a statement that it "mourns with great sadness and sorrow one of the p illars of Egyptian diplomacy and its shining symbols throughout the ages, former Foreign Minister Nabil Elaraby, who passed away on Monday." It added: "The great deceased spent his life defending the interests of his country, and raising its flag high among nations in all international forums, and history will remain a witness to the great national role he played in the epic international arbitration to restore the precious land of Taba to Egyptian sovereignty."
