The Office of the High Commission for Human Rights in Basra expressed its deep concern over the rise of (extremely dangerous) societal phenomena sweeping through Basra society without urgent government action. The Director of the office, Mahdi Al-Tamimi, said in a statement on Friday, "With the widespread phenomenon of drugs, suicide and the growing cases of human trafficking and begging, we are facing a dangerous indicator and a factor that destabilizes societal peace, which is the increase in cases of (homelessness and loss of shelter, especially for women of different ages, for various reasons, the most important of which is violence, which the House of Representatives refrains from legislating a law to prevent it in a manner that suits society, pointing to the failure to enforce laws that permit (building or rehabilitating shelters) and (which the Basra government can solve). Al-Tamimi warned against neglecting these phenomena that have become chronic social diseases, calling at the same time on the cen tral and Basra governments to read the reality of society and allocate budgets for treatment.
