Siena:Strait of Hormuz A third oil tanker caught fire after striking a sea mine in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, as announced by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Navy's public relations office.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the incident occurred when a shuttle tanker carrying 750,000 barrels of crude oil tried to navigate through an unauthorized route despite receiving warnings from the IRGC Navy. This led to an explosion and a severe fire on the vessel.
Earlier reports from the naval force indicated that a supertanker carrying crude oil had also exploded after encountering a sea mine while attempting to exit the strait through a similarly unauthorized and high-risk path.
The Strait of Hormuz has been experiencing increased insecurity following US-Israeli attacks on Iran in February 2026, heightening concerns over the safety of maritime operations along this critical passageway for global oil shipments.
