Top European Powers Plan New Iran Nuclear Talks as Sanctions Threat Looms

Berlin: Britain, France, and Germany are planning to hold fresh talks with Iran on its nuclear program in the coming days, a German diplomatic source informed AFP on Sunday. The European powers, collectively known as the E3, are actively working to arrange discussions with Iran, aiming to schedule these negotiations for the upcoming week. This move follows warnings from the trio that international sanctions against Iran could be reactivated if Tehran does not resume negotiations.

According to France24.com, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported that Tehran has agreed to hold talks with the three European countries, although this information comes from an unnamed source. Previously, Iran and the United States had engaged in several rounds of nuclear negotiations through Omani mediators. However, these talks were effectively ended when US President Donald Trump decided to join Israel in a military campaign against Iranian nuclear facilities.

The German diplomatic source emphasized the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, stating that Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are committed to working within the E3 framework to find a sustainable and verifiable diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear program. Despite these efforts, Iran maintains that it is not pursuing nuclear weapons.

The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) placed significant restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, the deal began to fall apart in 2018 when the United States, under Trump's leadership, withdrew from the agreement and reimposed sanctions on Iran. The German source also indicated that if no solution is reached over the summer, the E3 might consider the snapback option to reimpose sanctions.
