Trump Signs Executive Order to Rebrand Pentagon as Department of War

Washington: US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to rename the Department of Defense as the "Department of War," a title it held until after World War II. This move marks a significant shift in the administration's approach to military branding and aligns with Trump's efforts to project strength internationally.

According to France24.com, President Trump explained that the renaming was intended to signal to the world that the United States is a formidable force. He has frequently criticized the current name as "woke" and sees the change as a return to a message of victory and strength. Trump emphasized that peace must be negotiated from a position of strength, echoing sentiments associated with former President Ronald Reagan's "peace through strength" strategy.

The rebranding effort is part of Trump's broader strategy to reshape the US military's image and policies. This includes renaming military bases, banning transgender soldiers, and removing content that honors contributions by women and minorities. Despite criticism for his aggressive military actions, Trump continues to assert that his tough stance is consistent with his diplomatic achievements, including conflict resolutions in various regions.

Florida Republican Representative Greg Steube has proposed legislation in the House to formalize the department's name change, emphasizing the historical significance of the "Department of War." Companion legislation is also being introduced in the Senate by Senators Rick Scott and Mike Lee. The original Department of War was established in 1789 and was later restructured under President Harry Truman in 1947 to become the Department of Defense.

Trump and his advisor Pete Hegseth have long advocated for the name restoration, arguing that the United States has not won a major war since the name was changed. They believe that reverting to the original name will help reclaim the military's victorious history.

The administration's actions have sparked controversy, particularly with Congress. Efforts to restore the names of military bases previously honoring Confederate leaders have faced opposition, leading to creative renaming strategies that honor new individuals while maintaining similar names. These moves have drawn criticism from some Republicans who view them as a challenge to congressional authority.

Despite the potential requirement for congressional approval, Trump remains confident that Congress will support the name change. The administration's ongoing efforts to reshape the Pentagon's identity continue to provoke debate and highlight the intersection of military tradition and modern political dynamics.
