New york: Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, has condemned statements made by US President Donald Trump regarding Washington’s nuclear activities. Iravani asserts that these statements violate international law and pose a serious threat to global peace and security.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Iravani addressed a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Security Council President Michael Imran Kanu, highlighting the alarming nature of Trump’s remarks. The letter points to Trump’s public announcement on social media, dated October 29, 2025, where he instructed the U.S. Department of War to initiate nuclear weapons testing on par with other nuclear powers. Further exacerbating concerns, Trump, in an interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes on October 31, 2025, claimed that the U.S. holds enough nuclear arsenal to destroy the world multiple times over.
Iravani’s letter emphasizes that such rhetoric from a nuclear-armed state leader constitutes an explicit threat and indicates an intent to resume nuclear testing. This, he argues, is a violation of the United States’ commitments under Article VI of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and contradicts the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), to which the U.S. is a signatory. As a depositary government of the NPT, the U.S. has a special responsibility to uphold the treaty’s integrity, yet these statements undermine global efforts toward nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, risking a new arms race.
Iravani also accuses the United States of spreading misinformation to falsely portray Iran’s nuclear program as a threat. He labels the U.S. aerial attack on Iran’s safeguarded nuclear facilities on June 24, 2025, as a violation of international law and a grave attack on the global disarmament regime.
In response to the situation’s seriousness, Iran urges the UN Secretary-General to bring the matter to the Security Council under Article 99 of the Charter and assess its impact on global disarmament efforts. Iran calls on the Security Council to address these developments to maintain international peace and security.
