U.N. Declares Gaza ‘The Hungriest Place on Earth’ Amid Aid Blockade

Gaza: The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is worsening as Israel continues to restrict aid, defying international appeals. A senior United Nations official has described Gaza as ‘the hungriest place’ on Earth. Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), addressed reporters in Geneva, highlighting the critical risk of famine facing the entire population due to the ongoing blockade.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Laerke emphasized that the aid operation is severely constrained, making it one of the most obstructed in recent history. Although Israel allowed about 900 aid trucks into Gaza ten days ago, fewer than 600 have been offloaded, severely limiting food supply to the region on the brink of catastrophic hunger.

The blockade, imposed by Israel on March 2, aims to pressure Hamas into accepting a ceasefire on Tel Aviv’s terms. The blockade has sparked international criticism, as Israel and the United States propose an alter
native aid plan to replace the current UN-backed programs. The U.N. and international aid organizations have criticized the plan, arguing it aligns with Israel’s strategic objectives.

On Friday, Francesca Albanese, U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, called for international interventions to halt the deliberate obstruction of aid. She accused Israel of using humanitarian efforts as a facade to maintain control over Gaza and obstruct life-saving aid, diverting attention from accountability for alleged atrocities.
