Tehran: Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that Iran is committed to acquiring nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and that the contradictory behavior of U.S. officials breeds distrust regarding their seriousness in advancing the diplomatic process. During a phone conversation with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Araqchi emphasized Iran's responsible approach to resolving the fabricated issue surrounding its nuclear program. He called for genuine willingness and a realistic attitude from the other side to facilitate progress in diplomacy.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araqchi reiterated that as a member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Iran adheres to its commitments while asserting its right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, which includes uranium enrichment. He pointed out previous breaches of promise by other parties, urging them to refrain from proposing issues contrary to the NPT and to assure the removal of anti-Iran sanctions.
The minister highlighted the contradictory behaviors and comments of American officials, along with ongoing sanctions and threats against Iran, as factors intensifying distrust and suspicion about Washington's seriousness in pursuing diplomacy. Araqchi also reaffirmed Iran's readiness to engage with Germany, France, and Britain, expressing hope that these states would adopt a constructive approach to resolving existing differences peacefully.
In response, Guterres commended Araqchi's approach in explaining developments concerning the indirect talks between Iran and the U.S., stressing the importance of these talks in achieving positive outcomes. The secretary general also extended condolences to the Iranian nation regarding the deadly explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port.
