U.S. Expels South African Ambassador Amid Accusations of Race-Baiting

Washington: The United States has expelled South Africa's ambassador, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio accusing the envoy of being a 'race-baiting politician' who harbors animosity towards the U.S. and President Donald Trump. Rubio announced the decision on Friday via X, declaring that South Africa's ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, is no longer welcome in the country.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Secretary Rubio's statement emphasized that there is nothing to discuss with Rasool, labeling him as PERSONA NON GRATA. Rubio's remarks highlighted the administration's stance against Rasool's purported views, describing him as a politician who is allegedly antagonistic towards America and the President.

In response, the office of South Africa's president expressed disappointment with the U.S. decision, calling it 'regrettable' and urging the United States to uphold 'diplomatic decorum.' A statement from the presidency reaffirmed South Africa's dedication to fostering a positive relationship with the U.S., despite the expulsion of Ambassador Rasool.

The diplomatic tensions occur against a backdrop of recent geopolitical developments, including South Africa's legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice over allegations of genocide during the conflict in Gaza. This legal move prompted President Trump to halt U.S. aid to South Africa following his re-election on January 20.
