U.S. Proposal Contains ‘Many Ambiguities’: Foreign Minister Araqchi

Beirut: Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has stated that a recent U.S. proposal for a nuclear agreement contains ‘many ambiguities,’ though Tehran intends to respond to it in line with national interests in the coming days. Araqchi made these remarks during a visit to Beirut, Lebanon, where he was attending the signing ceremony of the Arabic edition of his book, ‘The Power of Negotiation.’

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araqchi disclosed that the proposal was delivered to the Iranian government by Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi during a brief visit to Tehran. Araqchi noted, ‘We received a letter from the United States, but it contains many ambiguities and raises several questions. Many of the issues are unclear.’ He added that Iran would provide an appropriate response in the coming days, guided by its principled stance and the interests of the Iranian people.

Araqchi reiterated Iran’s commitment to its uranium enrichment program, describing it as a ‘red line’ and a source of national pride. He emphasized that uranium enrichment is a scientific achievement attained through the hard work and expertise of Iranian scientists. He further stressed that Iran has endured over 20 years of U.S. sanctions to protect this national interest, and will not abandon enrichment under any circumstances.

The issue of uranium enrichment has been a major point of contention in the ongoing indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington. These talks, which began in mid-April, have seen five rounds of discussion mediated by Oman. Iran insists that any agreement must guarantee the removal of sanctions while upholding its right to enrich uranium.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated on Monday that Iran would not be allowed to enrich uranium under any deal concerning its nuclear program. Tehran, however, insists that there will be no deal if ‘zero enrichment’ remains a condition.
