Tehran: Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf has called on the United States to reconsider its approach and abandon failed ideas of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if it really wants to reach a nuclear deal with Iran.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the speaker made the remarks as U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken of zero uranium enrichment in any agreement over Iran’s nuclear energy program. Iran says it reserves the right to enrichment, because it is a signatory to the non-proliferation treaty (NPT), rejecting Washington’s statements which are the echo of Israel’s stance.
Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf stated that if the U.S. president genuinely seeks a deal, a change in approach is necessary, advising against adherence to Netanyahu’s strategies. This comment came during his address to the Iranian Parliament’s session on Sunday.
Qalibaf highlighted a U.S. proposal that Iran received through Oman on May 31, noting that it excludes the lifting of existing sanctions. He remarked that this indicates Washington’s contradictory and insincere stance in its indirect nuclear negotiations with Tehran.
The U.S. allegedly speaks of economic easing for Iran, but in practice, it attempts to limit Iran’s international right to enrichment while withholding promises of sanctions relief. Qalibaf argued that such a one-sided agreement is clearly rejected based on logic.
He reiterated Iran’s commitment to addressing economic challenges domestically and using internal resources to pressure the U.S. into acknowledging the necessity of a mutually beneficial agreement.
The enrichment issue remains a significant point of contention in the ongoing indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington, which began in mid-April. The discussions, mediated by Oman, have so far included five rounds of talks.
Iran insists any agreement must ensure the removal of sanctions while protecting its right to enrich uranium.
